Aldine and Greenspoint Battery Backup: A Greens Bayou Floodplain Guide

If you live in Aldine, Greenspoint or anywhere along Greens Bayou, you've probably lived through two kinds of bad weather: storms that flood, and storms that knock out power for days. A battery helps with the second one, but where it goes matters a lot because of the first. This guide covers both, plus what the Texas rules say today and what we could not verify.

Key Takeaways

  • Greens Bayou had more flooded homes in Harvey than any Harris County watershed except Brays Bayou (HCFCD).
  • Battery placement, not just battery size, is the main local question.
  • Texas SB 1252 limits city rules on residential batteries up to 100 kWh (TDLR).
  • Renters can't install one, but landlords and owners can.

Why does Aldine battery backup start with the bayou?

The Harris County Flood Control District says the Greens Bayou watershed covers 212 square miles in north Harris County, including parts of Houston and Humble, and held 607,601 people in the 2020 Census. During Harvey, it "had more flooded homes than any other watershed except Brays Bayou," almost 16 percent of the county's home flooding (HCFCD, Greens Bayou).

That changes the buying conversation. In most of Houston, people ask how many hours of backup they need. Here, the first question is whether the equipment can sit above the water line, and whether the home needs repairs before it needs a battery.

Reporting five years after Harvey described a watershed that is "dense with households" and still waiting on flood control money. Texas Standard reported that Harris County had $115.7 million of projects in the works, with six stormwater detention basins finished or under construction (Texas Standard). Those basins help. They don't remove the risk.

One honest gap: we looked for Greens Bayou specific figures for Tropical Storm Imelda in 2019 and couldn't find a district number we could cite. Imelda did dump about 25 to 30 inches of rain across northeast Harris County (Texas Tribune), but we won't claim what it did to your street.

What is the housing like in Aldine and Greenspoint?

Aldine is an unincorporated community in Harris County. The 2020 Census counted 15,999 residents, 4,438 households and 4,745 housing units there (Wikipedia, Aldine, Texas). That is a small footprint compared with the wider Aldine area, so treat it as a snapshot, not the whole north side.

Greenspoint is different. It grew around Greenspoint Mall, and the area was largely developed between the mid-1970s and mid-1980s, with apartments built alongside the office towers (Wikipedia, Greenspoint).

The item most people ask us about is the electrical panel. Older homes sometimes have a 100 amp main service, and that affects what you can add. We have no sourced figure for how common that is in Aldine or Greenspoint, so we won't guess. The only reliable check is the label on your main breaker. If it says 100, read our guide to a 100 amp panel and battery backup in Houston before you plan anything.

We also could not verify an Aldine renter share from a primary Census table, so we're leaving that number out. If you're a landlord or an owner of a multi-unit property, that's fine. The next sections apply to you either way.

What do Texas rules say about installing a battery now?

A residential energy backup system is one that provides no more than 50 kW or stores no more than 100 kWh. Under SB 1252, effective September 1, 2025, a city can't adopt or enforce an electrical code amendment or ordinance that regulates the installation or inspection of such a system (TDLR). Every Eos residential plan is under that 100 kWh line.

Three things did not change. Electrical work must still follow Chapter 1305 of the Texas Occupations Code. It must still follow the National Electrical Code. And it must be done by licensed Texas electrical contractors with licensed electricians (TDLR).

Municipally owned utilities keep the power to regulate inside their own service area, per TDLR. Utility interconnection is a separate process, and we'll walk you through it for your address. We're also not going to tell you what any particular office will or won't ask for, because that's changing and we'd rather you hear it from the installer than from a blog.

How long do north Houston outages actually last?

In 2023, Texas averaged 281.5 minutes of power interruption per customer excluding major events, and 496.2 minutes including them. The U.S. figures were 256.6 and 342 minutes (EIA, Electric Power Annual, Table 11.3). So the average year is not the story. The tail is.

Hurricane Beryl in July 2024 is the example. CenterPoint reported 2.26 million customers affected, "the largest outage in the company's history," and on the Wednesday after landfall about 1.1 million were still without power. The company projected that another 400,000 could remain offline past the following Sunday (ABC13).

We can't say how long a given Aldine street was dark. The public record we found is by company or county, not by neighborhood. What the numbers do support is simple: a multi-day outage in the Houston area has happened, and the plan should not assume 4 hours.

Where should the battery go in a floodplain home?

The short answer is high, dry and not in the path of water. Put the question to your flood map first. FEMA's Flood Map Service Center shows your zone, and the Harris County Flood Warning System shows live bayou levels. Neither tells you the elevation of your garage slab, so that part needs a site visit.

Our guide to battery backup and flood elevation in Houston goes through the placement logic, what happens to a battery that gets wet and how to document your setup. Read it if your home sits near the bayou or any drainage channel. A wall mount above the likely water line, a garage with a raised threshold, or an interior wall are all possibilities. None of them is a promise.

A battery also isn't a flood fix. If your street went under in Harvey, your first dollars may belong in the house itself.

Our finding: In the Greens Bayou neighborhoods we talk to, placement is where the sale is won or lost. We would rather tell you "not this wall" than install something that sits at the same height as the last flood line.

What size system fits an Aldine home?

Start with the entry-level plan. The Essential plan is one 9 kWh battery module (8.76 kWh usable) with a smart controller rated 11.5 kW continuous and 17.1 kW surge, and it's built for critical circuits: refrigerator, Wi-Fi, lights and medical devices. Eos lists up to 6 hours at minimal load for that setup. See the Essential plan for current pricing, since plan prices live on that page and nowhere else.

Does that cover a Beryl-length outage? Not by itself, and we'd rather say so. A single module fits the usual 1 to 4 hour outage and the essentials. For multi-day events you add modules, and the larger plans stack them behind the same controller.

Here's a simple way to decide:

  • Fridge, internet and a fan or two: Essential is a reasonable starting point.
  • Window AC, a medical device running overnight: ask for a load check before you pick a size.
  • Whole-home comfort during a long event: look at the larger plans, and confirm your panel first.

The 11.5 kW and 17.1 kW figures are controller limits, not a promise that every appliance runs at once. Central AC startup is the usual limiter. That's why we size from your actual loads.

What if you rent, or you own the rental?

Renters generally can't wire a battery into a home they don't own, and shouldn't try. If you rent, the useful move is to ask your landlord, and share the facts from this page. A battery stays with the property, and it's the owner who benefits from it.

If you own a single-family rental in the area, read our landlord's guide to battery backup for a Houston rental. For apartments and condos, where shared meters and common panels change everything, see our multi-family battery backup guide for Texas apartments and condos.

We don't have a reliable count of how many Aldine or Greenspoint households rent. Greenspoint was built with a lot of apartments, as noted above, so the conversation is real. But we'd rather ask about your building than assume.

Which nearby pages should you read next?

If you're comparing north and northeast Houston, our Humble and Atascocita buyer guide covers a neighboring part of the same watershed from a different angle. The Greens Bayou watershed includes parts of Humble, per HCFCD, so some of those placement points apply here too.

For the broader Houston picture, see our Houston service page and the Humble service page. Both list how we work in the area.

Ready to see what fits your home?

The planner asks about your home, your panel and what you want to keep running, then shows the system that matches. It takes a few minutes, and you can save your progress and come back.

Or call Eos at 833-989-3737 to talk through your setup with an installer.

FAQ

Does Aldine flood often enough to worry about a battery?

Greens Bayou had almost 16 percent of Harris County's Harvey home flooding, per HCFCD. That's a reason to plan placement carefully, not a reason to skip backup. Check your FEMA zone, then choose a spot above the likely water line.

Does the City of Houston inspect my home battery?

Under SB 1252, cities can't regulate the installation or inspection of residential backup systems up to 100 kWh (TDLR). Licensed Texas electricians and the National Electrical Code still apply, and utility interconnection is a separate step we handle with you.

Is a 9 kWh battery enough for a long outage?

For essentials, it covers the usual short outage. For multi-day events like Beryl, when 1.1 million customers were still dark days later (ABC13), most homes need more modules or a smaller load list.

Can I install a battery if I rent in Greenspoint?

Not on your own. The owner has to approve and pay for it, because it ties into the building's electrical system. Share this guide with your landlord and point them to the planner.

Will a battery protect my home from flood damage?

No. It keeps power on during an outage. If your street floods, repairs and elevation come first, and the battery has to be placed above the water line.

The bottom line

Aldine and Greenspoint homeowners face two storms at once, flooding and outages, so the right battery plan starts with placement and a realistic load list. Check your flood zone, check your panel, and ask for a plan built around your address.
